Design Plus Powered by Light+Building Competition Confers a Seal of Quality

Exhibition of award-winning products at Light+Building

The ‘Design Plus powered by Light+Building’ competition illustrates the innovative potential of the sectors represented at Light+Building and offers insights into the future-oriented products to be seen at the fair. On the basis of the competition criteria – technology, ecology and design – an international jury of experts has now selected 36 products for the Design Plus Award, three of which have also been singled out for a ‘Best Of’ distinction. They are the water-protected Berker W.1 range made by Germany’s Berker company, the Tweeter luminaire by Belgium manufacturer Delta Light and the Wireflow pendent luminaire by VIBIA from Spain. This year, 238 entries were received from 145 exhibitors – 18 more than at the last event in 2012 – from 24 countries.

70 students and young graduates with degrees in creative subjects from 15 countries also took part with their visionary concepts and solutions. Of the 89 entries, the jury chose ten, two of which were awarded the ‘Best Of’ label and two a Special Mention. They are: the ‘Extended Light’ wall luminaire by Markus Bauer, the highly versatile ‘Screen’ standard lamp by Anselm Kempf, the delicate ‘Optimist’ clamping luminaire by Cosima Geyer and ‘a floor lamp’ by Miriam Aust and Sebastian Amelung. For young designers, the competition is a good opportunity to draw the attention of the sector to themselves and to make contact with manufacturing companies.

The award-winning products of the exhibitors and students will be on show in a special exhibition at the ‘Design Plus powered by Light+Building’ area during Light+Building 2014, from 30 March to 4 April. The winners of the ‘Best Of’ labels will be honoured at an awards ceremony. Additionally, all award-winning products will be portrayed in a special magazine to be published at the beginning of the fair.

The competition is organised by Messe Frankfurt in cooperation with the German Design Council (Rat für Formgebung), the centre for design expertise in Germany.
